This revival deck of 82 cards is based on 3 uncut sheets of playing cards kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Another print of the trumps sheet can be found in the collection of the Deutsches Spielkartenmuseum in very bad condition.

On the National Gallery sheet, the printed trumps cards are reversed in a mirror image. Our version reverses it back because the Deutsches Spielkartenmuseum sheet clearly shows the trumps printed in the correct orientation. The German sheet offers an important clue concerning its origin and date because it is associated with a sheet belonging to a book printed in Perugia in 1501. The most common theories point to a Florentine origin, dating as far back as the XVth century to the early XVIth century.

The rest of the deck take place on 2 sheets with the same numbers of cards. Those sheets show a very different engraving style with much more refinement. For this reason, it could be concluded that they respectively present 2 different decks. Nevertheless, other theories exist.

There are missing cards among the three sheets to compose a full tarot deck. On the trumps sheet, one Fool and one Queen is missing. While no tens can be found on the other ones.

For the purpose of use, I recreated those missing cards and four additional Queens to fit the style of the second engraver.

I waited the longest to decide upon this deck and then missed it so I was delighted to see Sullivan list the last 50 copies available to purchase. This deck has surprised me the most of all the decks I own of Sullivan. I feel so much love from this dear little deck. It has a surprising warmth to it and the interplay between the staining on the cards and the actual image is masterclass in that the pattern of stain alone adds to the meaning of the actual card eg the 3 of swords whereby I see a sad, lonely face contained within the actual sword formation. I deeply treasure this deck and would advise all to make a purchase, it will surprise you in many beautiful ways! Thank you.

Absolutely astounding – like holding a piece of history in your hands. As with everything Sullivan Hismans creates … superlative in every way!
